The Seattle Mariners this week traded 3B Eugenio Suárez to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for C Seby Zavala and RHP Carlos Vargas.
The Mariners are working to reduce the number of strikeouts in their lineup, and this is the 2nd high strikeout player to depart from Seattle this offseason (Teoscar Hernández was not extended a qualifying offer). Geno was 2nd in all of MLB in strikeouts with 214, and Teoscar Hernández was 3rd in all of baseball with 211 strikeouts.
I understand why they made this trade but the return seems questionable, and this only will make sense on opening day if they use the freed up ~$6M (Geno’s 2024 $11M contract minus Urias’ ~$5M) to acquire impact.
